Abstract

This study aims to explore one of the soldiers named Mehmet (of Ilgın, Konya) mentioned in Falih Rıfkı Atay’s book, Fire and Sun, Mountolive. In doing so, we aim to express our gratitude and respect to all “the nameless heroes”, who conribute to the founding of the Turkish Republic. In the establishment of the Turkish Republic, each and every soldier (regardless of their rank, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk) has important responsibilities and by commemorating Mehmet of Ilgın in Fire and Sun, Mountolive we want to emphasize the patriotic deeds of many nameless heroes by having a glimpse into the memories of Mehmet of Ilgın and Falih Rıfkı Atay during WWI. It is an undeniable fact that despite many differences with regard to their etnic, class and cultural background, Anatolian people from all walks of life manage to come together and fight for the independence of our country. Hence, our ancestors following Atatürk as their commanders has become the role model for all the nations, who fight against the Imperialist countries since many Anatolian people/nameless heroes illustrated through their deeds how “the spirit of freedom and the love of independence” might win a glorious victory against the Western colonial powers. Thus, we think that the Republic Day of October 29th is a good opportunity for us to commemorate our veterans, martyrs and express our deep gratitude towards them for the sacrifices they made for our national independence.
